The Israeli army has seized some Palestinian controlled parts of the Gaza strip. This followed a major attack on Palestinian security position during the night. The moves are in reaction to Palestinian shelling of an Israeli town on Monday. The Palestinian group Hamas has taken responsibility for the shelling. An Israeli general says troops will stay in the recaptured area for as long as it takes to end such attacks. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called the Israeli raids and its reoccupation of some Palestinian land an unforgivable crime. Israeli troops withdrew from two thirds of Gaza in 1994 as part of a peace aGREement.
