The foreign minister of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban group has rejected an appeal for the protection of two ancient Buddhist statues in Afghanistan. Wakil Ahmad Muttawakil met with United Nation Secretary-General KofiAnnan in Islamabad, Pakistan. Mr. Annan urged the Taliban official not to wreck two ancient Buddhist statues in Afghanistan. However, Mr. Muttawakil said the destruction is almost complete. The Taliban has ordered the destruction of all statues in Afghanistan that were created before Islam. This includes the two large statues of Buddha in central Bamiyan Province.
