B.In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. After you hear a question, you must choose the bestanswer from the four choices marked A),B),C)and D).

Passage One

You are at the beach swimming with some friends. Everyone is having a good time. All of a sudden you see some of your friends dragging a man out of the water. His heart is still beating, but he is not breathing. What should you do?What must you do in order to save his life?

In such a case, artificial respiration is necessary. An effective way of reviving a person is the mouth-to-mouth method.Knowing how to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation quickly and properly can be criticalas itcan help you save a life.

First, lay the victim on his back.Check inside the mouth for any foreign objects.Second,by putting one hand on the forehead of the casualty and one hand under the neck, push the head back so that the chin sticks up.Remember,if you suspect a neck injury, use the jaw-thrust method—press up on the angle of the jaw just below the ears. This will move the tongue out of the back of the throat. Now,pinch the nostrils closed and then place your mouth over the victim's mouth. Then, blow your air into his mouth. His chest should rise.Remember, remove your mouth to let the victim exhale.Repeat this process twelve to fourteen times per minute.

Questions 1to 3are based on the passage you have just heard.

1.What is an extremely important part of artificial respiration?

2.In one minute, how many should you breathe into the casualty, approximately?

3.In mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, where does the air you breathe into the person go?

Passage Two

When a child enters school,he will learn many different kinds of skills. For example,he will learn to speak correctly,to read well, and to behave properly. One of the most important skills that he must acquire is good handwriting.

There are two main ways in which the English language is written by hand. The first form is called printing. It looks much like the letters in this reading selection. The letters have simple lines or curves. They are not connected. The second method of writing is called cursive.Cursive letters are slanted to one side. They are usually connected.Printing is usually learned before cursive writing.

Each person has a unique cursive writing which is difficult to copy exactly. For example,it is difficult to forge a person's signature on a check or credit card bill. Some people believe that your handwriting reveals a lot about your personality. The study of predicting a person's character or personality from handwriting is called graphology.

Questions 4 to 6 are based on the passage you have just heard.

4.From this reading selection, what may we conclude?

5.What is writing which is not connected called?

6.What does graphology deal with?

Passage Three

The world's first completely automatic railway had been built under the busy streets of London. The railway is called the Victoria Line, and it is part of the complete London underground railway.

The new Victoria Line was opened in 1969.This new line was very different from the others.

The stations on the other lines need a lot of workers to sell tickets, and to check and to collect them when people leave the trains.

This is all different on the Victoria Line. Here a machine checks and collects the tickets, and there are no workers on the platforms.

On the train, there is only one worker. If necessary, this man can drive the train. But usually he just starts it; it runs and stops by itself. The trains are controlled by electrical signals which are sent by the so-called“command spots”.

The command spots are the same distance apart. Each sends a certain signal. The train always moves atthe speed that the command spots allow. If the command spot sends no signals, the train will stop.

Most of the control work is done by computers. The computers also fix the train's speeds, and send the signals to the command spots.

Other machines make sure that the trains are alwaysa safe distance apart. One train may stay too long at a station;the other trains will then automatically move more slowly. So there is no danger of accidents on the line.

Questions 7 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.

7.What happened to the London underground railway three decades ago?

8.On the Victoria Line, who does all the checking and collecting of tickets?

9.What is the task of the one worker on the Victoria Line train?

10.If each train moves at its own speed, what will happen on the line?

C.Write down the sentences you hear.

1.No matter how employees feel about work, their primary motivation to work is to earn a living.

2.Society encourages people to look to the future rather than to the past.

3.Cultural conflicts occur as a result of misinter- pretation, ethnocentrism, stereotypes, and prejudice.

4.Crafty men condemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them.
