阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

(A)

When people talk of a virus(病毒)these days, chances are that they are talking about computer viruses that have the power to wipe out all the valuable work they may have stored in their computers.Imagine, this virus has the power to make military(军事)systems, big banks, airports, hospitals and traffic systems come to a halt(中断)!

The softer the name of the virus, the deadlier it may be.Remember the recent Love Bug virus, which created such trouble over the world? It came as an“I love youmessage and anyone who opened that love-filled e-mail,was caught in the virus trap.

What does a computer virus do?It targets electronic objects that are programmed. The virus spreads through connections between these electronic devices(装置).For virus spreading experts,e-mail is a favourite method of unleash- ing(释放)their destructive weapon.

But scientists warn that this is not the worst that can happen. There is more. For people are also connected through phones. The next virus may actually target mobile phones, especially those that are programmed to do many tasks apart from just communicating. It would then be easy for a virus to infect those programmes and create major disorder.

For example, these viruses may have the power to record your phone conversations and make others hear them. They could create problems with your electronic money accounts, or they could create a mountain of telephone bills for calls you never made. And that would be a disaster.A report on this was published in the New Scientist recently.

One way out would be to have simpler phones with not so many different functions(功能).That way there would be fewer programmes for viruses to attack. But mobile phone makers are in a fix.People no longer want an electronic item to perform just one task. They want more and more functions added on.That would mean more software programmes to make the mobile phone perform all those functions. And that means the possibility of more viruses.

56.Which of the following statements is untrue about a computer virus?

A.It can not only attack a computer but also a mobile phone.

B.It can get rid of all the useful information stored in a computer.

C.It can destroy important systems like the military systems and traffic systems.

D.It usually spreads through the e-mail system.

57.According to the scientists,___________ .

A.mobile phones will have fewer functions in the future

C.mobile phones with the single function of communicating will not be affected by viruses

D.mobile phones have already been affected by viruses

A.in trouble        B.in debt

59.It can be inferred from the passage that ___________ .

A.scientists and common users have differentconcerns(关心)aboutmobile phones

B.a virus can have worse effects on a computer than it does a mobile phone

C.limiting the functions of mobile phones can prevent them from being infected

D.mobile phone makers are on the side of the scientists

Priscilla's eyes burned. Her throat was constantly dry.She suffered from headaches and could hardly sleep. It was as though she had suddenly developed a strange illness.

Experts finally found out the cause of her illness. The level of formaldehyde(甲醛)gas in her kitchen was twice the maximum(最大量)allowed by federal standards for chemical workers. The source of the gas?Her nw kitchen cabinets and wall-to-wall carpeting.

The Ouchidas were victims(受害者)of indoor air pollution, which is not given enough attention partly because of the nation's drive to save energy. The problem itself isn't new.“The indoor environment was dirty long before energy conservation(保护)came along, says Moschandreas,a pollution scientist at Geomet Technologies in Maryland.“Energy conservation has tended to accentuate the situation in some cases.”

The problem appears to be more troublesome in newly constructed homes rather than old ones.Back in the days when energy was cheap, home builders didn't worry much about unsealed cracks(裂缝).Because of such leaks, the air in an average home was replaced by fresh air about once an hour.As a result, the pollutants pro- duced in most households seldom built up to dangerous levels.

“Culture shockoccurs as a result of total immersion(进入)in a new culture,it happens to“people who have been suddenly transplanted abroad.Newcomers may be anxious because

they do not speak the language, know the customs,or understand people's behavior in daily life. The visitor finds that“yesmay not always mean“yes.That friendliness does not neces-sarily mean friendship,or that statements that appear to be serious are really intended as jokes. The foreigners may be unsure as to when to shake hands, when to start conversations,or how to approach(接近)a stranger. The idea of“culture shockhelps explain feelings of being puzzled.Language problems do not account for(解释)all the disappointments that people feel. When one loses everything thatwas once familiar, such as understanding a transportation system, knowing how to register for university classes,or knowing how to make friends, difficulties in dealing with the new society may comeup.

“...when a person enters a strange culture,he or she is like fish out of water.Newcomers feel at times that they do not belong to and feel separated from the native members of the culture, when this happens visitors may want to reject everything about the new environment and may speak highly of the positive aspects(积极方面)of their own culture.Conversely(相反的)visitors may look down upon their native country by rejecting its values and instead choosing to identify with(与……相联系)the values of the new country,in order to be accepted by the people in it.

68.The expression“culture shockcan be used to describe those __________ .

Suppose that we lined up our roughly 14 million United States businesses in order of size, starting with the smallest, along an imaginary road from San Francisco to New York. There will be 4,500 businesses to the mile,or a little less than one per foot.Suppose further that we planted a flag for each business. The height of the flag pole represents the yearly volume of sales(销量),each $10,000 in sales is shown by one foot of pole.

The line of flagpoles is a very interesting sight. From San Francisco to about Reno,it is almost unnoticeable,a row of poles about a foot high. From Reno eastward the poles increase in height until, near Columbus,Ohio—about fourfifths of the way across the nation—flags fly about 10feet in the air.

But as we approach(接近)the eastern terminus(终点),the poles suddenly begin tomount(升高).There are about 3,000,000firms in the country with sales over $500,000.These firms take up the last 75miles of the 3,000-mile road. There are 200,000firms with sales over $1million. They take up the last 50miles.Then there are 1,000 firms with sales of $50,000,000 or more. They take up the last quarter of a mile before the city limits, flags flying atcloud height,5,000 feetup.

At the very gate of New York,on the last 100feet of the last mile,we find the 100 largest industrial firms. They have sales of at least $1.5 billion,so that their flags are already miles high.Along the last 10 feet of road, there are the 10 largest companies.Their sales are roughly $10 billion and up:their flags fly 190 miles in the air, almost in the stratosphere(平流层).

72.What is the author's main purpose in this passage?

A.To tell the reason why the largest firms are in New York.

B.To show the geographical distribution(分布)of the United States businesses.

C.To provide a general idea of the size of businesses in the United States.

D.To tell us how the United States businesses are arranged.

73.What's the correct order of the following places from east to west?

A.San Francisco,Reno,New York,Columbus

B.San Francisco,Reno,Columbus,New York

C.New York,Columbus,Reno,San Francisco

D.New York,Reno,Columbus,San Francisco

74.Among the four parts of the imaginary road, which part, considering all the firms in it,has the largest total volume of sales?

A.The last 75 miles.

B.The last 50 miles.

C.The last 100 feet of the last mile.

D.The last quarter of a mile.
