One day Billy walked down the street to post a letter for his mother. He did not see a letter box on the street. But he saw a basket that had a sign on it. The sign said: PUT LITTER IN THIS BASKET.
"I can read, "thought Billy, "but they can't spell. They can't spell the word‘letter' right."
He dropped the letter in the basket. Then he ran home.
As soon as he got home, he told his mother about the basket.
"No, no, child," said his mother, "you put the letter in a litter basket. A litter basket is for old papers and other things that are no use."
"Oh, "said Billy, "is that what the word on the basket meant? ""Yes, it did, "said his mother. "The word is‘litter', not‘letter'. Now get the letter and post it."
Billy run out with a word "OK".
A truck was at the basket when he got to it. A man was putting the old papers in the truck. "Stop! "said Billy, and he began to tell the man about the letter and what had happened.
With the help of the man, Billy found the letter and put it in the letter box. On the way home, he said to himself, "Why don't the teacher tell us all the words when we first got to school?Then things like this won't happen."
