Many years ago, Manhattan Island, which is a part of the GREat city of New York, was covered with forest. Along the shore were small Indian villages. In fact, Indians were the only people of the island until 1609. In the spring of that year. Henry Hudson, a famous sea captain, arrived here. He was trying to find a short way to the Far East for Dutch traders. His ship was very small. It was only about the size of one of the lifeboats you see on the modem oceanship. Of course, Henry Hudson did not find a shorter way to the Far East. Instead he reached the shore of North America. He came to the mouth of the large waterway -- the Hudson River.
As he came near to the shore he saw the Indian villages. The Indians seemed friendly. They even came out to meet the ship and offered their furs to the Dutch sailor for glass beads (玻璃珠.)and other small things. Certainly furs are more valuable than glass beads and small things.
Indians, then, had no need of any money. They made small beads out of calm shells. These shell beads were the most valuable to them. They were used for decorating their clothing. So the Indians were glad to receive the glass beads and some small things. They were very useful to them. When Henry Hudson returned to Holland, he showed the fine furs. He told of the rich soil, the streams filled with animals. Now Dutch traders began to send many ships to the rich new world across the sea.
In 1623 the Dutch took the island as a colony. Three years later, they sent their first governor to the colony. The governor thought it best if he bought the land from the Indians. He met with the Indians and smoke the pipe of peace. The Indians thought if the white men wanted to give them pretty glass beads, brightly coloured cloth, and sharp steel knives, they might as well accept the gifts. Those beads and other things would be worth about twenty-four dollars if you bought them today.

We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary ,both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(把…按能力分班)pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic(学术的)ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning,
In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups; this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate(适当的).We encourage our pupils to use the library and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work; it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to reach this goal.
59.By "held back" in the first sentence, the author means __________.
A.made to remain in the same class
B.forced to study in the lower class

61.The author aGREes that a teacher’s chief concern should be the development of students’_______________.

B.total personality
C.learning ability and communicative skills

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. "I was a clothes addict," he jokes. "I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled." Today David wears casual clothes - khaki pants and sports shirt - to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. "I’m working harder than ever," David says, "and I need to feel comfortable."
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work.in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as "dress-down Friday" of "casual Friday." "What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing." said business consultant, Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. "A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work," says the owner of a software company, "so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code." Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale. Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. "Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day," one person said. "For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes."
62.David Smith refers to himself as having been "a clothes addict," because_____________.

Getting a new PC is one thing. Keeping it running smoothly is quite another. While a personal computer should continue to perform well for years, users know that system unsteadiness does exsit. Yet you can reduce it to the smallest amount by following the tips below.
First, put in as little software as possible. You’ll have fewer software-related problems and a system that is easier to manage.
Second, you should ensure that you have as much as memory (RAM) in your PC as you need. If you run Windows 98, your computer should have at least 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM and more. You can also get by with 128 MB of RAM if you use Windows NT or Windows 2000, but these operating systems will run much more smoothly if you have 256 of RAM or more.
Third, make sure you buy good hardware. No-name products may be cheaper and sometimes just as good as name-brand products, but name-brand products usually become well-known because of their steadiness. It’s wise to buy products from famous companies because Windows will more often support the hardware that you buy. If you are starting out with computers, it’s also a good idea to buy ready-made systems from major manufacturers. They are likely to have been tested thoroughly with your operating system, and you will generally experience fewer problems.
Fourth, do prepare for disaster. No matter how well your system runs when you get it, the day will come when it will need to be replaced. Hopefully, you will replace it because technology has become out-dated, but you may need to replace it also because the hard drive crashes or you begin experiencing problems that no one can figure out. That’s why it’s important to copy your important information regularly. Whether you use a tape backup device or a CD-RW drive, it’s important to make a regular backup plan and stick to it.
67.If you want to use Windows 2000, but your computer only has 64 MB. What will you have to do ?
A. Enlarge its RAM to at least 256 MB.
B. Put in good software in your computer.
C. Enlarge its RAM to at least 128MB
D. Have Windows NT to made it.
68.How many pieces of advice on buying good hardware does the writer give us?
A. Three B. Two C. One D. Four
69.It cab be inferred from the last paragraph that______________.
A. your computer will copy the important information when the system fails.
B. your computer might lose all the information when its hard drive crashes.
C. you have to replace your computer one day.
D. you must change your system regularly.
70.The best title of this passage can be__________________.
A. The Tips You Must Follow
B. How to Start out with a Computer
C. How to Use Your PC Better
D. How to Keep Your PC Stable(稳定).

Vienna-In spite of Iraq’s decision to stop oil deliveries, the 11-nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will not increase production to make up the shortfall, ministers decided Tuesday in Vienna.
The 11 oil ministers decided to meet again on July 3 to discuss the effects of the Iraq temporary stop. The organization’s president, Charktd Khelil of Algeria, said after the meeting that stocks were high and prices were stable, so quota (配额) increases were not necessary.
The E. U. Commission has expressed concern about Iraq’s output stop. A speaker said OPEC had to take all possible measures to keep or lower the oil price.
