Organ transplants(器官移植)give people a new lease on life(新生).
When Leah Horchler was born 14years ago,she looked like a normal ,healthy baby .But within a few days ,it was clear somethingwasn't right. Her skin was yellow—a sure sign of jaundice(黄疸病).Jaundice indicates(说明)a person's liver(肝脏)isn't working correctly.
In most cases ,jaundice goes away. For Leah,it didn't.
Leah's doctors ran tests ,but the results didn't determine(决定)anything. So when she was six weeks old,Leah underwent(经历)exploratory(勘查的)surgery(外科手术),so doctors could look inside her body and find out what was going on.
The doctors discovered that Leah's liver had serious problems. They told Leah's parents that within a few years ,she would probably need to have a liver transplant.
Sick Time
Leah turned two without a new liver. She turned three without one.She kept having birthdays ,all with her“bad”liver.
But that didn't mean Leah was completely healthy.Growing up in Phoenix,AZ,she was still very jaundiced. She wasn't allowed to do any physical activity—no bike riding or playing sports.
