阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Right is right. Right? Of course. But is left wrong? Well, the Romans used to think so. They thought left-handed people were mistakes of nature. Latin, the languages of the Romans, had many words that expressed this view. Some words we use today still have this meaning. The Latin word “dexter” means “right”. The English word “dexterous” comes from this word. It means “handy” (clever with hands). So, right is handy. But the Latin word for left is “sinister”. The English word “sinister” comes from this word. Sinister means “evil” (very had). Is it fair to call right-handed people handy and left-handed people evil? Well, fair or not, many languages have words that express such beliefs. In old English, the word for left means “weak”. That isn’t much of an improvement over “evil”.
Not very long ago, children were often forced to write with their right hands. Doctors have since found that this can be very harmful. You should use the hand you were born to use.
People who use their left hands are just starting to get better treatment. But why they get all these bad names in the first place? One reason may be that there are not as many left-handed people as there are right-handed people. There is one left-handed person for every five right-handed ones. People who are different are often thought to be wrong. But attitudes do seem to be changing. Fair-minded right-handed people are finally starting to give left-handed people a hand.
56. What does the passage leads us to believe when one writes?
A. He can only use his right hand B. He can only use his left hand
C. He can use either his left hand or his right hand
D. He can use both his left hand and his right hand
57. The last sentence of this article means ___________.
A. Fire-minded right-handed people want to change the habit of the left-handed people
B. Fire-minded right-handed people are starting to help the left-handed people
C. Fire-minded right-handed people are starting to use left hand to write and so on
D. Fire-minded right-handed people are starting to give up using their left hands
58. After we read the article we can certainly know that __________.
A. left-handed people have been treated poorly
B. the number of the left-handed people is larger than that of right-handed people
C. right-handed people are much cleverer than left-handed people
D. left-handed people are less smart but hardworking
59. Which of the following is NOT RIGHT, according to the article?
A. At one time, left handed people were forced to use their right hands.
B. Left-handed people today are being treated better than those in the past
C. There are not as many left-handed people as there are right-handed people today.
D. “Dexterous” comes from Latin , means “evil” and English “sinister” means “handy”

Vienna - In spite of Iraq’s decision to stop oil deliveries, the 11-nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will not increase production to make up the shortfall, ministers decided Tuesday in Vienna.
The 11 oil ministers decided to meet again on July 3 to discuss the effects of the Iraq temporary stop. The organization’s president, Charkid Khelil of Algeria, said after the meeting that stocks were high and prices were stable, so quota (配额) increases were not necessary.
The E.U. Commission has expressed concern about Iraq’s output stop. A speaker said OPEC had to take all possible measures to keep or lower the oil price.
Saudi Arabia’s Oil Minister Ali Al-Nuaimi had earlier said there would not be any shortfall of oil in the market. The organization had already taken steps to fill the gap, he said. OPEC Secretary General Ali Rodriguez added that the period of the Iraq stop to exports was not known, so other exporters were not going to lift quotas yet. If the market was destabilized (动摇的), a suitable response could be made.
Iraq on Monday stop shipments of crude oil to protest against the U.N. Security Council’s decision to extend the oil-for-food programme by only a month, instead of the normal six-month renewal (延期).
Just before the Vienna meeting, oil prices had gone up, with a barrel of OPEC crude selling for 27.05 dollars, up from 26.81 dollars last Friday. North sea oil was at 29.26 dollars Monday evening.
OPEC wants the oil price to stay within a margin of 22 to 28 dollars and achieved that with cuts in January and March that reduced 2.5 million barrels per day off quotas.
60. Iraq made the decision to stop oil deliveries because _________.
A. oil price is too low in the international market
B. the U.N. Security Council has decided to shorten the time for the oil-for-food programme

62. “The organization” here refers to _______.

D. oil is connected with people’s daily life

Scientists are uncovering the secrets of twin port cities lost under the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, a researcher said recently.
Herakleion and Menouthis were rich and proud cities until something reduced them to rubble (碎石)and buried them in the mud beneath 30 feet of sea water, French underwater explorer Franck Goddio said at the American Geophysical Union conference.
"This is a mystery that is ongoing," said Goddio, a founder of the European Institute of Marine Archeology, a Paris-based underwater research organization backed by the wealthy Hilti Foundation of Liechtenstein(列支敦士登基金会).
The destruction of the twin port cities has haunted Goddio ever since he happened upon the site about 15 miles from Alexandria while exploring sunken ships from Napoleon’s fleet.
Goddio and his group of expert divers, marine archeologists(海洋考古学家) and others, is using high powered vacuums, satellite navigation systems and sophisticated sonar(声纳) to excavate(挖掘) the sunken cities from underneath a carpet of silt about one meter (three feet) high.
Walls of shops, remains of streets and gold artifacts have been found and recovered.
Some experts believe that the port cities were destroyed by a series of massive earthquakes, much like the quakes scientists believe felled Troy(特洛伊城), Jericho and other ancient cities. The uniform direction of the collapsed columns and walls suggest an earthquake, Goddio said, but no fault lines have been found nearby.
Other researchers believe a massive wave, caused by either an offshore earthquake or a distant underwater landslide, could explain the catastrophe. Still others think rising seas and a shift in the Nile River outlet doomed the cities.
"The argument, as you can see, continues," Goddio said.
65. The reason why the two port cities disappeared under the waters of Mediterranean Sea is

On May 29, 1973, Thomas Bradley, a black man, was elected mayor of the Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the third largest city in the United States, with a population of three million. About sixteen percent of the city’s population are black.
News of this election appeared on the front pages of newspapers everywhere in the United States. Here is how one major newspaper reported the event:
LOS ANGELES ELECTS BRADLEY MAYOR UNSEATING YORTY
BLACK WINS 56% OF VOTES
Bradley called his victory over Yorty “the fulfillment (实现) of a dream”. During his childhood and youth, people had kept telling him, “You can’t do this, you can’t go there, because you are a Negro.” Nevertheless he had won a decisive victory over a man who had been won 43.7 percent.
Los Angeles voters have had many opportunities to judge. Thomas Bradley had to form an opinion of him. The son of a poor farmer Texas, he joined the Los Angeles police force in 1940. During his twenty-one years on the police force he earned a law deGREe by attending school at night. He was elected to the city council (市政厅) ten years ago.
At the time of the Los Angeles election, three other American cities already had black mayors, but none of those cities had as large a population as Los Angeles. Besides, the percentage of blacks in those other cities was much larger. Cleveland, Ohio, had thirty-six percent black when Carl Stokes was elected mayor of Cleveland in 1967. In the same year Richard Hatcher was elected mayor of Cary, In Newark, New Jersey, sixty percent of the population were black when Kenneth Gibson was elected in 1970. Thus election of a black mayor in those cities was not very surprising.
In Los Angeles thousands of white citizens voted for Thomas Bradley because they believed he would be a better mayor than the white candidate(候选人). Bradley had spent forty-eight of his fifty-five years in Los Angeles. Four years ago Bradley lost mayoral election to Yorty. This time Bradley won.
68. In the author’s opinion, it was surprising that ________.

D. voted for Bradley because they trust him
70. Bradley hit the front page headline for ________.
A. he was the first black mayor in history
B. he was the first black mayor in the south of USA
C. he was the first black mayor of one of the largest cities in USA
D. a poor farmer’s son could also win an important election
71. From Bradley’s victory in the election we can see that _________.
A. blacks had equal rights as whites in the USA
B. black people’s situation began to be improving much than before
C. one can be successful through hard work in US no matter what color you are
D. it is sure that someday US will have a black president

Swimmers at a Sydney rock pool were treated to an unusual sight this week - a man coming out of the water with a shark shaking from his arm.
Russian immigrant Andranik Markossian had been snorkeling(潜泳) at local Bronte beach Sunday when the yard-long shark nearly swam into him, turning just inches away from his mask.
Markossian thought it was just a fish, so he reached out and touched its tail. But when he did, it spun around again and bit him on the arm.
Markossian, in turn, kept his grasp on the tail. He said, "Because I thought, if I let go, it will bite me more."
With the two locked in a strange embrace(拥抱), Markossian decided to walk to shore, where he would have a better chance of getting the shark to release itself.
When Markossian got on shore, the shark still refused to give up its grip. With shock starting to set in, he lay down. Fortunately, his partner Marina Godess, saw him.
"When I first saw it I thought that he was just showing me a fish and showing off," she said. "But when he was on the beach and I realized what it was, I was more scared than he was."
After five minutes of trying to pry open (撬开) the shark’s jaws, a lifeguard finally cut off its head. "It looked like it was a really good bite, it got on real tight," lifeguard Mark McEvoy told The Associated Press.
Markossian will have a permanent(永久的) scar on his right forearm from the shark bite, but he required no stitches(缝补) and left the hospital a few hours after the attack.
Markossian says the attack won’t stop him from swimming, but reGREts the shark had to die. "If they could have removed it without cutting the head off, I would have preferred it," he said. "All animals are our friends. I would say this shark was just unlucky."
Markossian’s family, meanwhile probably doesn’t reGREt the death. After lifeguards removed the shark, he asked to keep it - and served the nice meat to his family for dinner.
Markossian’s shark attack apparently hasn’t discouraged many people from swimming at the popular Bronte rockfaces. Locals were back there today, and divers say there are hundreds of such sharks in the area.
Swimmer Val Tomlin said, "if you’re going to swim in the ocean you have to take that risk."
The manager of the Australian Shark Attack File at Australia’s Taronga Zoo, John West, said this kind of shark is known to be agGREssive and to attack frequently, but never fatally(致命地).
Rodd Stapley, of the Sydney Aquarium said, "They react very quickly and they just bite. We’ve had divers been bitten by them and you actually have to pry the jaws open."
