As he sat on a stone to rest,he heard some bells. They were ringing in London. They seemed to say:“Turn back again,Whittington,Lord Mayor of London.”
Dick turned back to London. There,he found a job with a rich merchant. He worked in the kitchen and in the room where he slept there were many rats. His cat had a job catching them all.
One day,the merchant was sending a ship to Africa.“We have all sent goods to trade. What have you to trade?” he asked Dick.“Only my cat,” said Dick.
The cat was put on the ship which sailed for Africa. There a rich Sultan had many rats.He gave a lot of money for the cat.The ships captain brought the money home to Dick Whittington.
Dick then traded more goods which he bought with this money.Together with the merchant, the boy who was once poor became rich.
Ten years later, the King of England made Dick Lord Mayor of London. The bells of London had been right.
