小朋友们，大家都认识there is 吧，它是“某地有某物”的意思，它是个小瘦子，后面只能跟单数名词。看：
There is an apple on the desk．书桌上有一个苹果。
它有个小哥哥 there are，它可是个小胖子，愿意交朋友，它一出场，后面的单数名词就变成复数了。如：
There are two apples on the desk．书桌上有两个苹果。
There are some bikes under the tree．树下有几辆自行车。
和小弟弟there is脾气一样，there are构成句子时，也爱站在句首，后面直接跟复数名词。
对了，两人还经常合作呢，但是“一山不容二虎”。在后面又有单数名词，又有复数名词时，兄弟二人只有一人出现，两人还商量好，离be最近的是单数名词时，弟弟there is上；是复数名词时，哥哥there are上。如：
There is a pen and two pencils in the pencil-box．
There are two pencils and a pen in the pencil-box．
