Dear Dr. Cory,
Is it true you can get blind by looking at the sun?
Samantha |
Dear Samantha,
We asked professor Jimmy Brown from Oxford to answer your question. Here's what he said.
“The answer to Samantha's question is YES! You can become blind from looking at the sun, because doing so focuses its rays on the retina, sensitive cells at the back of the eyeball, part of which is the fovea. Fovea damage can cause blindness at the center of a person's eyesight.”
“This is because the sun burns a hole in the fovea just like it will burn a leaf or paper when focuses through a magnifying glass.
“A special case of sun damage can happen during a solar eclipse, when you look easily at the sun. But be careful, there is still enough light to hurt the eye. NEVER look at the sun, even during an eclipse!”
注:blind /blaind/ adj. 瞎的
focus / `fuks/ v. 使某物集中于一点
retina /`retin/ n. (眼睛的)网膜

Dear Dr. Cory,
I am twelve years old and am very thin. I have a good appetite, but I never gain any weight. I was wondering, why is that?
Jenny Brown |
Dear Jenny,
It's important to think about how tall you are and how active you are.
Your weight may be just right for your height. Or, if you are a very active person, you may be burning your food calories as fast as you eat them. Your body metabolism, might just be faster than your friends'. You might be burning the calories faster.
When you begin to grow fast, you may need to eat even more to grow as you should. Or in your teenage years, hormonal changes may mean you'll need to eat less. Or more. It just depends on your body.
注: height /hait/ n. 身高
calorie /`klri/ n.卡路里(热量单位)
metabolism /m`tblizm/ n. 新陈代谢
hormonal /`hmunl/ adj. 荷尔蒙的
