1. if only; only if
(1) if only仅以条件从句出现, 主句省略, 表达强烈的愿望或惊讶, 意为“要是……就好了;但愿”。如:
If only I had met her earlier!我要是早点儿遇到她该有多好!
If only he had known about the news. 但愿他知道这个消息。
If only I could be rich. 要是我富有就好了。
(2) only if引导条件状语从句, 意为“只要;只有在……的时候”。如:
Only if it clears up, we will go immediately. 只要天放晴, 我们就立刻走。
I am sure he will succeed only if he tries hard. 我敢肯定只要他努力, 他一定能成功。
2. such as; as such
(1) such as相当于for example, 用来列举一系列事物。如:
I visited several cities such as New York, Chicago and Boston. 我参观过好几个城市, 像纽约、芝加哥和波士顿。
We are in GREat need of reference books, such as dictionaries and hand-
books. 我们急需参考书, 如词典和手册。
(2) as such意为“以那种身份(资格);名副其实地;本身”。如:
She is a guest and must be treated as such. 她是客人, 必须那样对待她。
Money, as such, does not bring happiness to people. 金钱本身并不会给人带来幸福。
They don't oppose the plan as such. 他们本身不反对这个计划。
3. from across; across from
(1) from across是双重介词, 意为“从那边”。如:
He came from across the street. 他从街道那边走来。
Can you swim from across the English Channel?你能从英吉利海峡游过来吗?
(2) across from亦为双重介词, 意为“在……的对面;在……对侧”。如:
The Agriculture Bank of China is just across from our school. 中国农业银行就在我们学校对面。
—Is the No. 1 Middle School far away from here?一中离这里远吗?
—No, it is just across from the post office. 不远, 就在邮局对过。
4. result in; in result
(1) result in意为“结果;终于;导致”, 句子的主语是因, in的宾语是果。如:
His careless speech resulted in much argument. 他的发言过于草率, 因而引起许多争议。
The accident resulted in the death of two passengers. 这次事故造成两名乘客死亡。
(2) in result意为“结果;引起(结果)”, 多用于句末。如:
He failed in the exam in result. 他结果考试没及格。
Thousands of people lost their lives in the accident in result. 结果是成千上万的人在这次事故中丧命。
5. in all; all in
(1) in all意为“总共”, 相当于altogether。如:
There are more than a thousand cars in all. 总共有一千多辆车。
Tom worked three days and earned 1, 000 dallars in all. 汤姆干了三天, 总共
挣了一千美元。
(2) all in意为“精疲力竭的”, 相当于exhausted。如:
He was all in at the end of the race. 赛跑结束时他精疲力竭了。
6. turn in; in turn
(1) turn in意为“上交;交回”。如:
I picked up a wallet and turned it in afterwards. 我拾到一个钱包, 然后把它上交了。
You must turn in your equipment before you leave. 你离开之前必须交回设备。
(2) in turn指两个人时, 意为“轮流”;指三个人或三个以上时, 意为“一个接一个;依次”。如:
My husband and I cook the meals in turn. 我和我丈夫轮流做饭。
The boys were summoned in turn to see the examiner. 男孩子们依次被召入见考官。
