1. examine  vt.

The policeman was examining a young man who had been in a fight. 警察正在盘问一个参加斗殴的青年。

2. promise  vt. & vi. ①答应（后可跟名词、代词、不定式或从句）; ②预示；有希望；有可能   n. [C] 诺言；约定

You must promise me that you won’t do that thing. 你必须答应我不做那件事了。

I’ll try to go, but I can’t promise. 我尽力去，但不能保证。

The dark clouds promise rain. 乌云密布，看来会下雨。

3. whatever  pron. & adj. 无论什么；任何（事物）；无论什么样的  

Whatever you say, I shall not believe you. 不管你说什么，我都不相信你。

Take whatever magazines you want to read. 任何你想读的杂志，你都可以取阅。

4. believe  vt. & vi. 相信；认为

I’ll believe it when I see it.   我亲眼见到才能相信。 

I just could not believe my eyes. 我简直不敢相信我的眼睛。

5. recognise  vt.

1）认识；认出；辨出（接名词或代词）

I recognised Mary in the photograph. 我在照片中认出了玛丽。

2）承认

I recognise that he is the best player in the team. 我承认他是队里的最佳选手。

【注意】recognise是瞬间动词，强调认出的动作，不可与段时间状语连用。

6. continue vi. & vt. 继续；持续

The noise continued until the teacher returned.  喧闹声一直持续到老师回来。

We continued our journey after a rest. 休息后我们又上路了。

7. besides 

1）prep. 除……之外 (还有……)

Besides making a promise, he carried it out.  他不但许下了诺言，而且还履行了它。

2）adv. 而且；还有

It’s too late for a walk now, and besides, it’s raining.  现在出去散步太晚了，而且天又下雨。

8. prove  vt. 证明；证实

These facts prove the truth of his words. 这些事实证明他的话是真的。

They proved that what they said was true. 他们证明了他们所说的是真实的。

This further proved the strength of our economy. 这进一步证明了我国经济的威力。

9. reGREt 

vt. 遗憾；抱歉；悔恨 n. [U] 遗憾；抱歉

I reGREt not to have started earlier. 我后悔没有早一点出发。

I was full of reGREt that I had forgotten to post your letter. 由于忘了给你寄信，我非常懊悔。

【注意】reGREt to do sth.  表示对要做的事情表示抱歉；regret doing / having done sth. 后悔做了某事。
